When I first secured a UX design internship at Puppet, the word pandemic was something rarely used. Now it’s a keyword in our vocabulary. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, my placement experience has certainly differed in comparison to what I originally expected. I worked from home for all of my placement instead of being in the office but this helped me develop new skills such as proactiveness, organization, motivation and balance all from the spare room in my home. My goal for my placement year was to fully immerse myself in this experience. …

After this blog post, there is only one more until my placement year at Puppet comes to an end. I’ve been making the most of my final months by spending more time working on Forge alongside John Murray. I’ve been storyboarding, presenting powerpoints to the UX team and also taking some time off to wind down before my time as an intern at Puppet comes to a close.

This month I had…

Puppet Belfast Office

This month was filled with first-time opportunities for me. I had the opportunity to go into the Puppet Belfast office to meet people close to home, face to face instead of digitally on Zoom. Meaning I had to get up much earlier knowing my workplace for the day wasn’t next door to my bedroom. …

Back in my ‘Month 6 of UX interning Remotely’ Medium article I discussed some of my goals for the rest of my time at Puppet. One of these goals was that I would improve upon my user testing skills. This month John Murray has been doing some great work on some upcoming changes for the Forge and I have been getting involved in that process. Whether it be by research, thinking around concepts or by writing user testing scripts and refining the small details of upcoming user testing, I have…

Image representing confusion, overload of thoughts and information.

Have you ever been in a situation where you have been given too much information and too many tasks to process at once? Did it make you stressed, overwhelmed or filled with anxiety? Perhaps your judgement was clouded and you couldn’t complete the task you wanted to. When this happens it is called cognitive overload.

We can experience cognitive load in many different ways. …

Accessibility and inclusivity

This month I have learnt so much when it comes to the topic of accessibility. I completed and passed an accessibility course by EdX called ‘Introduction to Web Accessibility.’ I’ve understood that accessibility is relevant for everyone — from someone with physical disabilities to a person who is hard of hearing to someone who uses a phone outside on a bright day to a person watching videos on a public computer who forgot their headphones. Accessibility is for everyone.

In Puppet, accessibility is extremely important. Everyone should be able to use Puppet products regardless of their abilities…

Volunteering, research reading and exploring accessibility within Puppet.

This month’s UX interning update is slightly overdue because I’ve been taking some PTO and have been enjoying the Easter holidays. I also used a volunteering day which was something I haven’t yet done with Puppet.

Volunteering

At Puppet each employee has 4 days during the year which they can use as volunteering opportunities. The pandemic has made it very difficult to use these days as volunteering opportunities are limited, however I had the opportunity this month to volunteer in a Community project alongside some of my colleagues. I helped put together wellbeing…

With half a year completed of interning at Puppet, I have so much to reflect on to remind myself of what I've gained from this experience. I have 6 months left and I want to set myself 6 goals to strive toward for the remainder of my time here.

My 6 goals

Become a confident presenter

One thing I can do well is talk and when it comes to presenting I can plan a script that includes everything I’m going to say. …

This month has been filled with learning about modals, drawers & wizards, furthering my work on the Puppet Design System as well as communicating with those in my team to receive the always valuable feedback needed. Everyone is extremely tired of zoom meetings and communicating with others over a screen, however, those meetings are so important. Without them, I could be going down a wrong path and unaware because no one could correct me or I could gain some information that could majorly help me with my projects and understand a concept that…

The run-up to the end of 2020 at Puppet.

2020 has been one of the quickest yet slowest years of my life. As I’m sure many others would agree, when being locked away from others in the world it can be difficult to grow your network, find the motivation to learn new skills and grow as an individual. I am fortunate that Puppet has helped me do all those things since starting in September. …
